Ten top tips for winter

As part of this year’s Self Care Week (18-24 November), the NHS in east Kent has ten top tips for staying well this winter.

  1. At the first sign of a winter illness, even if it’s just a cough or cold, act quickly and get advice from your local pharmacist before it gets more serious.
  2.  Make sure you keep your medicine cabinet well stocked, especially with cold and flu remedies, and painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol.
  3. If you take regular prescription medication, please check that you have enough and ask your GP practice if you need more.
  4. Get your flu vaccine. Eligible patients are offered this for free. Visit the NHS flu vaccine website for more information.
  5.  Keep your home warm. Keep your bedroom at 18C at night if you can – and keep the bedroom window closed.
  6. Try not to spread illness. Use tissues for coughs and sneezes and dispose of them in a bin. Wash your hands.
  7.  Visit nhs.uk/staywell for more details on how to help you and your family to stay well this winter.
  8.  Look after your mind. Find straightforward, tailored advice about how to feel happier and healthier by visiting the One You website.

  10. Call NHS 111 if you medical help urgently. NHS 111 is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Trained advisers will determine which service you need, including whether you need to see a GP or attend a minor injury unit. You can also visit:111.nhs.uk
