Canterbury and Coastal health services this Easter

Before people turn their attention to Easter egg hunts, hot cross buns and the long weekend, the NHS is urging everyone to check they have the medication they need.

Dr Mark Jones, Chair of NHS Canterbury and Coastal Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “It’s important to check you have enough medication to last over the Easter break. If you are running low ask for a new prescription sooner rather than later.

“It’s essential for regular medication such as blood pressure tablets, statins or an inhaler.

“People should also consider saving the Health Help Now web app – www.healthhelpnow-nhs.net  – to their computer, tablet or smartphone. It’s a time and location specific app which will advise on the best service to access depending on a person’s symptoms. It will also show when services, such as pharmacies are open or closed – which is invaluable at bank holidays.”

People are also being encouraged to check their medicine cabinet is well stocked. Your medicine cabinet should include:

• Painkillers (paracetamol and ibuprofen – including child versions if you have children under 12)
• Thermometer
• Plasters, bandages and sticking tape
• Antiseptic cream
• Sunscreen
• Rehydration salts
• Indigestion treatments
• Antihistamines (such as hay fever tablets and insect bite creams).

Dr Jones added: “NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day every day for people who need urgent medical care when it is not a 999 emergency. People who need to see or speak to a GP urgently over Easter should phone 111.

“GP practices will open as normal from Monday 14 to Thursday 17 April, and re-open on Tuesday 22 April.

“Some pharmacies across Canterbury and Coastal will be open on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. Pharmacists can provide advice on many common illnesses and advice on medication.

“Confidential emotional advice and guidance is open 24 hours a day every day from the Mental Health Matters helpline on 0800 107 0160 from landlines, and 03003 305486 from mobiles.

“For emergency dental care, contact your own dentist first. At evenings, weekends and bank holidays you can call DentaLine on 01634 890300.”
