The award-winning Health Help Now web app, which helps people in Kent and Medway find the right health care instantly, is now available as an iPhone and Android smart-phone "app."

The free new updated versions - which boast many improvements - come a year after the original web-based service was launched at www.healthhelpnow-nhs.net.

Search the Apple Store or Android Google Play Store for Health Help Now to download them to your phone.

In its first 12 months, the original web-based Health Help Now has had more than 36,000 hits.
Typical comments from users include:

• I just did a test look of all the services and it looks great. It is way better than I expected it to be. It is laid out very well - which is crucial. It enables you to find information quickly that you would not normally know where to find. It includes articles and health-related helplines and websites.

• It is very informative and useful. About time.

• It is a well laid-out and easy-to-use website.  It suggested services I had never heard of.  A great idea!

• Health Help Now was easy to download to my phone and proved simple to use. It is helpful to know the best place to go.

Health Help Now lists common symptoms and suggests the best place for treatment. It shows the nearest service, whether it is  open or closed, and provides a map with directions of how to get there.

The web version was named Best Website in the Association for Healthcare Communications and Marketing (AHCM) Communicating Healthcare Awards 2014 and a silver award in the Chartered Institute for Public Relations regional PRide awards for Best Use of Digital.

It has also been shortlisted for the CIPR Excellence Best Use of Digital award and for the Best Consumer Website DigiAward by CorpComms magazine.

New features on the Apple and Android versions include a health wallet where users can make notes about symptoms or questions they may need to ask a GP; keep a list of health appointments and contacts; save favourite pages from Health Help Now and view other useful apps.

GP Dr Chris Markwick, who oversaw development of the app, said:  “The new health wallet is a really useful tool for people to take control of their healthcare. You can keep notes about important things you need to ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist and see all your health appointments or contacts at a glance.

“The downloadable versions of Health Help Now make it even easier and more straightforward for people to be in control of their own health and to find the right treatment quickly when they need it.

“There is useful information and advice for people of every age. By using Health Help Now, you should be able to find the right treatment in Kent and Medway for you, whatever time it is and wherever you are.

“I am recommending it to my patients and I hope everyone who lives or works in Kent and Medway will download it so they have it ready if they need it, whether they are at home or out and about.

“Health Help Now will help them, and, by keeping A&E free for those who really need it, it will also help the NHS focus lifesaving care on the most seriously ill and injured patients.”
